Diktaturen als alternative Ordnungen
Auftaktkonferenz des interdisziplinären Verbunds für vergleichende Diktaturforschung an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
Diktaturen sind komplexe politische, soziale und kulturelle Ordnungen, die auf Unfreiheit, Gewalt und Unterdrückung beruhen. Sie sind aber auch Konfigurationen des politisch Möglichen, die Zustimmung erzeugen und verstanden werden müssen. Der interdisziplinäre Verbund für Vergleichende Diktaturforschung sucht nach Antworten auf die Frage, weshalb sich Menschen in spezifischen historischen Situationen freiwillig für die Diktatur entscheiden, sich für sie engagieren oder sich ihr widerspruchslos unterordnen.
Die Konferenz wird Prof. Dr. Jörg Baberowski (HU) und Prof. Dr. Michael Wildt (HU) mit Unterstützung der Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur, der Stiftung Humboldt-Universität und des ZMO veranstaltet. Alle Vorträge der Konferenz finden in deutscher Sprache statt.

Friday Film Club: Das Mädchen Wajda (German with arab subtitles)
Film screening and discussion
Where there’s a will, there’s a way – also when it comes to owning and riding a bicycle. Ten-year-old Wadjda lives in Saudi Arabian Riyadh, where riding bikes is frowned upon for girls. In her 2012 debut film Saudi writer and director Haifaa Al Mansour tells the story of how Wadjda’s dream comes true. This is the first feature-length film shot entirely in Saudi Arabia and the first by a female director. Haifaa Al Mansour had to overcome many difficulties to make this film.
After the film there will be a discussion with ZMO director Ulrike Freitag. How has life changed for people, and especially for women and girls in Saudi Arabia since “Wadjda”? And how easy is it for a female German historian to work there?

ZMO director Ulrike Freitag joins re:work
From October 1, 2017 ZMO director Prof Dr Ulrike Freitag will start her fellowship at the International Research Center re:work: Work and Human Lifecycle in Global History for a writing sabbatical. Her current book project is aimed at writing an urban history of Jeddah from the 1840s to 1947: Since early Islamic times, Jeddah served as the official port of Mecca, and hence as the major arrival point of Muslim pilgrims during their annual pilgrimage. It also developed into a major regional and international port, serving until the 1840s as the official Ottoman customs station for all goods en route from the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean...

New Affiliate at ZMO: Prof Dr Jens Hanssen
From October 1, 2017 Prof Dr Jens Hanssen is affiliated to ZMO. He is an Associate Professor of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean History at the University of Toronto. He has held junior research fellowships at the American University of Beirut and the Deutsche Morgenländische Gesellschaft in Beirut, and served on the academic advisory committee at the Lebanese Ministry of Culture and Higher Education to host Beirut as the cultural capital of the Arab world. He is interested in the connection between intellectual trends and urban culture in the modern Middle East, in particular 19th. and 20th century Baghdad...

Christiane-Rajewsky-Award

The German Association for Peace and Conflict Studies (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Friedens- und Konfliktforschung e.V. - AFK) is a scientific association of peace researchers and institutions from various disciplines, particularly from German-speaking countries. Each year, the AFK awards the Christiane-Rajewsky-Award for young researchers or initiatives that have made an outstanding contribution to peace and conflict research.
The price money amounts 2.500 €. Applications for the Christiane-Rajewsky-Award have to be submitted in electronic form until November 1, 2017. Generally, written works with a relevant peace and conflict research focus come into question.
